HMS Dragon

Dates: 1918 - 1944



"D" Class cruiser ordered from Scotts of Greenock in September 1916 and laid down on 24th January 1917. The ship was launched on 29th December 1917 as the 14th RN snip to carry the name that was first used in 1512 and previously by a destroyer sold in 1912. She was completed on 16th August 1918 and served with the Harwich Force in the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron. During 1919 this ship took part in operations against troops in the Baltic and in November 1923 was part of the escort for HM Battlecruisers HOOD and REPULSE with four other "D" Class cruisers. Her later service after 1924 included commissions in the Mediterranean, China and the West Indies. She was placed in Reserve at Chatham in July 1937 and used for Boys training until fully commissioned in July 1939.
