HMS Myrmidon

Dates: 1942 - 1958

“M” Class destroyer ordered from Fairfield at Govan with the 1939 Programme on 7th July 1939 with HMS MUSKETEER of the same Class. Both ships were laid down on 7th December 1939. This ship was launched on 2nd March 1942 as the 6th RN ship to carry the name which was first introduced in 1781 for a 6th Rate. It was last used in 1899 for a “B” Class (30 Knotter) destroyer by a mine in the Channel on 23rd March 1917. This ship was transferred to the Polish Navy after launching and renamed ORP ORKAN. She was commissioned for service in late 1942 and had been adopted by the civil community of St Helens, Lancashire after a successful “WARSHIP WEEK” National Savings campaign in March 1942Badge : On a Field Red, the head of a Greek soldier, helmet embossed with an ant on a roundel, all Gold.
