The South Lancashire Regiment was formed in 1881 from the amalgamation of the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot and the 82nd (Prince of Wales’ Volunteers) Regiment of Foot. at first it was named The Prince of Wales’ Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) From 1939 to 1958, it was referred to as the South Lancashire Regiment.

In 1958, it amalgamated with the East Lancashire Regiment to form The Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales’ Volunteers).

It is based in Warrington, Cheshire, England.
