HMS Beehive in 1944Written by Bernard LACOME Contact this person >>  "During the summer of 1944, the Germans sank a supply ship enroute to London from Ireland. The ship had navigated around the north of Scotland and met its fate somewhere between Lowestoft and Felixstowe. An MTB returning from a mission off the coast of Holland discovered barrels of GUINESS STOUT floating in the sea and, naturally, rescued them. Back in port, the Customs and Excise Officer impounded the barrels. BUT, some enterprising sailors used a brace and bit to drlll upwards through the wooden planking of the MTB into the barrels - and supplied many thirsty ratings and Wrens with free drinks. Months later, the brewers sent a cheque to the crew of the MTB - salvage money for the empty wooden barrels returned to them."
