| HMS Whirlwind |
  Dates: 1944 - 1969 "W" (WAGER) Class Fleet destroyer ordered from Hawthorn Leslie at Newcastle on 3rd December with 7 others of this Class as the 9th Emergency Flotilla on 3rd December 1941. The ship was laid down on 31st July 1942 and launched on 30th August 1943 as the 2nd RN ship to carry the name. Her build was completed on 20th July 1944. Following a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in March 1942 this destroyer was ’adopted1 by the civil community of the New Forest in Hampshire Badge : On a Field Blue, a head Proper with wind issuant from the south. Added on 05/01/2011HMS Whirlwind became a target ship for the RN and in October 1974 she sank whilst anchored in Cardigan and now lies in about 30 metres of water. Not a very nice way to go for such a fine ship.

" Sadly my father passed over last year, it has taken me some time to get all his things in order, he was an LS(RP2) during the 1950’s into the early 60’s ( I had to come along and spoil his fun I suppose), his ships included HMS GABBARD, HMS WHIRLWIND, HMS DIAMOND, and HMS EASTBOURNE... ..."
