HMS Calcutta

Dates: 1917 - 1941

The fifth vessel to bear the name Calcutta, the first a 54 Gun,4th rate ship in 1795. The last ship to bear the name was built by Vickers in 1917 and launched 1918. She was too late to see action during the First World War. In 1939 she was converted to an aircraft carrier and deployed to the Mediterranean. June 1940 she was part of a mission to rescue 4000 refugees from Bordeaux, France.
She participated in the Battle of Cape Matapan in March 1941. June 1941 she was sunk in an air attack.
