

Dates: 1946 - 1958
Modified BLACK SWAN-Class Sloop ordered from Denny of Dumbarton on 8th December 1942 under the 1941 Build Programme. The ship was laid down on on 30th November 1944 and launched by Mrs Russell on 18th February 1946 as the 8th RN ship to bear the name, first used for a Prize in 1653. It had last been used by a River Gunboat sold to the New Zealand Government in 1909 and renamed AMOKURA when used as a Training Ship. Build was completed on 12th December 1946.
Post War
HMS SPARROW served on the America and West Indies Station after working up In 1946. She stayed on that Station apart from return to UK for re-commissioning until 1953 when she went to the Far East to join the 3rd Frigate Flotilla. Her brief service there included a tour of duty with the RN element of the UN Task Force deployed off the west coast of Korea. In January 1951 after the end of the Korean war she was redeployed in the South Atlantic until March 1956 when she returned to UK to pay off into Reserve at Portsmouth. Placed on the Disposal List in 1957 she was sold to BISCO for demolition by Metal Industries and arrived at the breaker’s yard in Charlestown, Fife on 26th May 1958.
