HMS Undine

Dates: 1937 - 1939

First submarine to carry this name when launched in October 1937 and dating from 1847 when given to an Iron Paddle Packet. Fifth time of use by the RN and previously borne by 1917 destroyer wrecked in 1928. She was first submarine of this Class to enter service.

In September 1939 she was deployed for patrol in the North Sea to attack warships and shipping in the North Sea. This type of deployment with the Home Fleet continued throughout 1939. She sailed from Blyth on 31st December for duty in the North Sea and whilst in a position WSW of Heligoland carried out an attack by torpedo on two minesweepers which failed. The enemy ships then carried out depth charge attacks which damaged the submarine and caused extensive flooding forward, forcing her to surface when she was abandoned by the crew. Despite the efforts to scuttle the submarine did not sink and was boarded by a party from the minesweeper M.1204. All the ship’s company were rescued by the German ships and taken Prisoners of War. The Commanding Officer was Lieutenant Commander A S Jackson RN.

" Jim, Alan and Doug. Methinks the photo is of the Defender which was sunk in 1941, not the Daring Class destroyer (D114) which took part in the "Cyprus patrols".  I did "Cyprus Patrol" on HMS Undine (F141) in 1957. The new HMS Defender is a Type45 destroyer which will be launched in 2009. Pennant No D35. Last edited by Ray McWilliams"
