Dates: 1927 - 1945 HMS Rodney (pennant number 29) was a Nelson-class battleship built by Cammell-Laird at Birkenhead and commissioned on 10 November 1927. Complement: 1,640. From commissioning until World War II Rodney spent her entire time with the British Atlantic Fleet or Home Fleet. In 1931, the crew took part in the Invergordon Mutiny. HMS Rodney served with the Home Fleet from 1939 to 1942. She took part in the sinking of the Bismarck on the 27th May 1941 and, uniquely, torpedoed her after destroying a gun turret by shell-fire. This is the only known instance of one battleship torpedoing another. Rodney was with Force H in 1943 and returned to the Home Fleet from 1943 to 1945, being Flagship at Scapa Flow in 1944. She provided supprt to the Normandy invasion in June 1944, destroying targets at Caen and Alderney. In September 1944, she performed escort duties with a Murmansk convoy. After the war HMS Rodney was put into reserve in 1945 and finally scrapped at Inverkeithing in 1948 Association: HMS Rodney Association 229 Victoria Road St. Budeaux Plymouth Devon PL5 2DQ E-mail: hms_rodney@hotmail.com Website: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/4433/index.htm
