Royal Artillery Band

Dates: 1763 -

The Royal Artillery band has been based in Woolwich since 1763. However, the origins of certain instruments date back further. For example, the Royal Artillery have had a ’drum and fife’ since 1557. The Royal Artillery Band is the oldest established orchestra in the British Army.

During the 1960s, the band expanded to over 100 musicians. Today, it employs 40 musicians and is one of 22 regiments in the Corps of Army Music. It is one of the few orchestras in the British Army that are able to perform as a wind symphonic band and a symphony orchestra.
