HMS Maenad

Dates: 1949 - 1957

HMS Maenad was an Algerine class minesweeper.

The Maenad was laid down in Toronto, (Canada) on March 1, 1944. It was launched on June 8, 1944 and completed on November 11 of that year.

The ship was initially assigned to the 11th Flotilla of the East Indies Fleet with its last sweep being the Addu Atull in the Maldives.

HMS Maenad was then put into reserve in March 1947 and became part of the 6th Flotilla based at Singapore.

The ship was finally scrapped at Grays on December 18, 1957.

It was named for the maenads, female worshippers of the Greek god Dionysus and the Roman god Bacchus.
