| RAF Salalah |
Dates: 1928 - RAF Salalah, was a staging post in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman and lay in the fertile coastal plain of Dhofar, 650 miles from Aden. The airfield was constructed in 1928 and had been in constant use ever since as a military and civilian staging post. In the 1950s and 60s, Salalah provided refuelling and replenishment facilities for Beverley, Argosy, Dakota and other aircraft operating on the Aden-Masirah-Sharjah-Bahrain route, and could accommodate limited numbers of personnel for overnight stops. It is now Salalah Airport and the second busiest airport in Oman. Added on 03/03/2011During 1961 Salalah was involved in the movements of troops to Kuwait when Iraq threatened invasion to reclaim Kuwait. This is the Gulf war/police action that the media have forgotten. We worked for four days & three nights to keep aircraft refuelled/turned around & troops fed, until reinforcements arrived from Aden.
