Dates: 1944 - 1962
HMS Theseus (R64) was a Colossus-class light fleet aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy. She was laid down in 1943 by Fairfield at Govan, and launched on 6 July 1944. She was not commissioned, though, until 1946, too late to be involved in World War II. Upon her commission, she was used as a training ship.
In 1950, with the beginning of the Korean War, Theseus was deployed to Korea, for the type of operations that had been envisaged for her when the ship had been ordered during World War II. Her first operation involved suppressing enemy defences and communications at Chinnampo and other
areas. Her second operational patrol involved only CAP (Combat Air Patrol), because her catapult did not work, and thus the aircraft were unable to be armed with rockets and bombs. Her third operational duty was as part of a Commonwealth Task Force. Theseus sailed with accompanying ships from Sasebo in Japan. The carrier’s aircraft launched successful air strikes on bridges, North Korean troops and other opportunity targets, mainly concentrating on the Chinnampo area and creating much damage and chaos.
There have been a number of warships in the Royal Navy that have borne the name HMS Theseus, from wooden frigates to light fleet carriers. The name comes from an ancient king of Athens called Theseus.
HMS Theseus was a 74-gun third-rate frigate, launched in 1786. She took part in the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of the Basque Roads in 1809. She was broken up at Chatham in 1814.
HMS Theseus was a protected cruiser of the Edgar-class and was launched in 1892. She was involved in World War I and scrapped in 1921.
HMS Theseus was a Colossus-class light fleet carrier that was built in 1944 and was involved in the Korean War. She was scrapped in 1962.

"New Years Night 1955, It was traditional for the youngest crew member to ring out the old and ring in the new year.
I was the youngest crew member and therefore it should have been my duty.
However my twin brother also served onboard the same ship and the Captain decided that it would be rather novel to have both of us carry out this duty(privelege)
What a balls up;
My brother thought that he should have commenced the ringing and I thought otherwise, You have never heard such a racket in your life,
Fortunately all the Officers and crew who attended the ceremony had all had a good drink and thought it was hilarious.
Happy days and always remembered"
