| HMS Sceptre (S104) |
Dates: 1978 - Built by Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness, HMS Sceptre (S104) is a Swiftsure-class submarine, commissioned on 14 February 1978. Complement: 116. In 1988 Sceptre and Spartan sank the frigate HMS Ashanti off the South Western Approaches. Spartan fired a Sub Harpoon, and Sceptre finished a Tigerfish torpedo under the frigate’s belly to break its back. Her career has contained several incidents, from a collision with an iceberg in the early ’80s, a fire in 1991 while alongside at Faslane, and a propulsion overload in 2000 during post-refit trials at Rosyth. In 2005 the extent of repairs carried out at Gibraltar became controversial with both the Gibraltar and Spanish government. In 2007, HMS Sceptre carried out a 9 month patrol, one of the longest in submarine history.
