HMS Montclare

Dates: 1939 - 1954

HMS Montclare (F85) was originally a passenger ship built by the John Brown and Company on Clydebank for the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company her maiden voyage as a merchant vessel took place on 18 August 1922 from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal.

On 28 August 1939 the Montclare was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to an Armed Merchant Cruiser being commissioned as such in October 1939.

On the 2 June 1942 she was sold outright to the Admiralty. She was paid off as an Armed Merchant Cruiser in the Autumn of 1943 and converted to a Destroyer Depot Ship in Belfast between January and October 1944. She was with the British Pacific Fleet in this capacity throughout 1945

HMS Montclare was converted to a Submarine Depot Ship in 1947and based at Rothesay with the 3rd Submarine Flotilla.

In October 1954 HMS Montclare was decommissioned, being replaced as the 3rd Submarine Flotilla depot ship by HMS Adamant and towed to Portsmouth. In February 1958 she was scrapped by T.W. Ward at Inverkeithing.
